In the Heart of Waupaca County
In the Heart of Waupaca County
BACKGROUND: In today’s difficult economic times, an increasing number of parents are finding it hard to provide sufficient food for their families. Free or reduced cost breakfast and lunches at schools have helped relieve parents of part of this economic burden, but many children still go hungry during their weekends away from school. Project Backpack was launched in June, 2010, to help these children in need.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? Currently, Project Backpack provides food for hungry students in 11 schools throughout five school districts: Waupaca, Weyauwega/Fremont, Iola/Scandinavia, Amherst, and Manawa. Guidance Counselors or Teachers provide sign-up forms to students who qualify for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program.
Our vision for Project Backpack is to make this a sustainable program for years to come – not only in the schools we are currently assisting-but also eventually in the schools of surrounding communities.
To donate to Project Backpack, visit thelakeswaupaca.com/give and designate your donation as "Project Backpack." If you would like to sign up to volunteer, reach out to Jacci at (715) 800-8401 or jacci@thelakeswaupaca.com. Thank you for your continued support as we continue to work towards our goal of stamping out hunger in area schools one student at a time!
